Three days later, the police called me in for a formal statement.

Detective Miller and a younger female officer met me in an interview room. The atmosphere was quiet and serious. A projector screen displayed the evidence they had assembled.

“The chain of evidence is complete,” Detective Miller said, closing a file.

“Cynthia Price is charged with first degree murder. Skylar Price is charged with first degree murder, conspiracy, and filing a false report.”

“Jacob Harrison is charged with criminal mischief, tampering with official documents, and conspiracy. The DA’s office has filed, and the cases will go to trial.”

He stood up and extended his hand.

“Elena, on behalf of the Millbrook Police Department, thank you for coming forward. Your mother’s case was cold for three years. Now she will get the justice she deserves.”

I shook his hand.

When I walked out of the station, the sun was blinding. I stood at the top of the steps and took a deep breath. The air smelled like summer. Like cut grass and city noise.

My phone buzzed. It was the admissions office at Pinecrest University.

“Elena Martinez, congratulations. Your early admission has been formally confirmed. Your acceptance packet is in the mail.”

“The university is also offering you a full scholarship and a private dorm room. We look forward to seeing you in September.”

“Thank you,” I said.

I hung up and looked up at the sky. A flock of birds passed overhead, their shapes dark against the blue.

Mom, do you see? The people who hurt us are finally going to pay. And I’m going to live. I’m going to live a brilliant life.
