He Gave My Dress To Another Woman Chapter 11

The man looked like he hadn’t slept in God knows how long — hair a mess, stubble rough along his jaw, clothes wrinkled and stained. It took me a long, heavy moment to realize it was Ethan.

I had no idea how he’d even found us.

“Julian!” Ethan’s voice was raw. “You’re the one who convinced her to leave, aren’t you?”

“What gives you the right to come after my girlfriend? You call yourself a friend and then stab me in the back?”

Ethan had Julian by the collar, face inches away, screaming.

“I stole YOUR girlfriend?” Julian’s laugh was ice.

Julian swung first — one clean shot that sent Ethan staggering. “When I left for that overseas fellowship, I trusted you. I asked you to look after Chloe. And what did you do?”

“You told her I didn’t want her anymore!”

“You took the gifts I bought for her — the flowers, everything — and used them to confess to her yourself.”

The words hit me like ice water. Everything clicked — all at once, all in the same breath. That was how Ethan had known every detail about me back then. How every word out of his mouth had landed perfectly.

And that was why it all fell apart once the act couldn’t hold up. The whole thing had been a con from the start.

I was never his girlfriend. I was just a stolen prize.

Ethan spat blood from his split lip and snarled. “It’s your word against mine. She’ll never believe you.”

“She doesn’t have to.”

I stepped out of the shadows. Ethan’s face went white the second he saw me. “You’re worse than I thought,” I said. “And I already thought the worst.”

Ethan scrambled to his feet and lurched toward me. “Chloe, wait — let me explain — I’m sorry, I never meant for it to happen like this — I wanted to be with you so badly I stopped thinking straight. It was stupid, it was insane, but I —”

He reached for my hand. I stepped back, and his fingers closed on air.

“And Haley? Did you have feelings for her?”

“No — God, no. Never.” He shook his head hard enough to look painful.

“There was never anything real between us. The whole campus knows she set me up — everyone knows!”

I stared at him until the begging ran out.

“You want to know what I see when I look at you right now? A coward. No spine, no accountability, nothing. Even without Haley, there would’ve been a Jessica, a Megan, somebody.”

“All those years and you got bored. That’s all this ever was — you looking for something new. And now that it blew up in your face, you decide I’m the better option? What am I to you — a backup plan?”

Sweat rolled down Ethan’s temples. His mouth opened and closed, grasping for something to hold on to. “That’s not — Chloe, I —”

I didn’t let him finish.

“I want someone who’s all in. And if that person doesn’t exist, I’d rather be alone — and you know what? I’ve been happier alone than I ever was waiting around for you.”

“Chloe…” Ethan searched my eyes, desperate, hunting for anything — a crack, a flicker, some scrap of what used to be there.

He found nothing. I was done, and he could see it.

Ethan dropped to his knees, a full-blown panic attack seizing him as the reality finally crushed him. He couldn’t even catch his breath by the time campus security dragged him away.

After that, Ethan disappeared from my life completely.

Years later, I stood on a stage and accepted an industry award for co-developing a new cancer treatment.

I’d barely stepped off the podium when a staff member pressed a letter into my hand. The name at the bottom — Ethan.

[Congratulations, Chloe. You earned every bit of this. I’m proud of you — I hope that still means something.]

[As for me — I got what I deserved. I know that now.]

[I hope you keep going. I hope everything from here is better than what I gave you.]

I read it once, folded it shut, and dropped it in the nearest trash can.

My success didn’t need his blessing. It never had. I walked out into the daylight.

Julian was waiting outside, flowers in hand, grinning like an idiot. “Chloe. Congratulations! And…” He took a breath. “I love you. Can I finally have that chance?”

After all his patience, I looked at the flowers, looked at him. I smiled. And I said yes.

Some second chances are worth taking.
