Born Ditzy: Drunk Vows, Sober Goodbye Chapter 11

Celia walked up to me and looked down at me, her expression arrogant. “Feeling pretty pleased with yourself now, huh? You’ve moved into the Steele estate, you’re pregnant, and you’re Mrs. Steele again.”

I didn’t answer I just kept eating my strawberries.

[Celia sounds so bitter.]

[She’s totally jealous.]

Celia took a deep breath, then suddenly smiled. “You know what? Back in high school, Nolan brought me breakfast every single day. We went to school together and came home together. He didn’t talk much, but he was different with me than with everyone else. Before his mom passed away, she even said she wanted us to get engaged.”

[Here we go again!]

[Lyra, don’t believe her lies!]

I looked at her. “Oh.”

Her expression stiffened. “Is that all you’ve got to say?”

“What else is there to say?” I put down the strawberry. “Everything you just said is in the past.”

“Don’t you feel grossed out by it? Your husband has a whole history with another woman.”

I thought about it. “He never told me any of that, but he did say you have nothing to do with him.”

“And you just believe whatever he says?” Celia asked incredulously.

“Yeah.” I nodded.

Her expression went dark. She was about to say something when footsteps sounded behind us.

Nolan strode over, anger written all over his face. “Ms. Sanders, who let you in here?”

The moment Celia turned around, her expression softened into helpless innocence. “Nolan, I just wanted to see Ms. West. I didn’t mean any harm…”

Nolan came to my side and shifted so I was behind him. “I told you not to bother her,” he said angrily.

“But-”

“No buts.” His voice was cold and hard. “There’s nothing between you and me. Whatever happened in high school was just normal interaction between neighbors, and my mother doesn’t speak for me. If you show up in front of her again, I won’t be polite about it.”

[Mr. Steele is so hot right now!]

[He just blasted Celia without showing her a hint of mercy.]

[This is exactly how a good man should act!]

Celia’s face turned ashen, and her lips quivered. In the end, she turned and left. Before she walked out, she looked back at me.

In her eyes, there was resentment, jealousy, and something else I couldn’t quite read.

After she left, Nolan crouched down and took my hand. “I’m sorry. I didn’t handle things well, giving her the chance to come in here and bother you.”

I shook my head. “It’s fine. The strawberries are pretty good.”

He paused, then laughed. He reached out and wiped the strawberry juice from the corner of my mouth, his gaze so tender that it was almost tangible.

That night, Nolan took me out to the garden. It was strung with lights that twinkled here and there, like something out of a fairytale.

He held my hand and led me to the center of the garden. There was a table there, and on it, a small velvet box.

(Is this a proposal?]

[More like a re-proposal. They already divorced, remember?]

Nolan opened the box to reveal the diamond ring inside. It was way bigger than the last one and sparkled so hard under the lights that my eyes hurt.

“Lyra West.” He dropped down on one knee. “The last ring I gave you was one that I bought in a rush. Even our marriage started when you were confused and barely knew what was going on. This time, I want to ask you properly.”

He looked up at me, his eyes reddening slightly. “Will you marry me again? This time, it’s for the rest of our lives.”

[Ah! I do!]

[Lyra, say yes already!]

[Mr. Steele’s speech has me sobbing!]

I looked at the ring, then at Nolan’s face. In the moonlight, his eyes were filled with nothing but me.

I drawled, “You’re sure you’re not going to divorce me this time?”

“I’m sure.”

“Then…” I held out my hand. “Okay.”

Nolan smiled. He slipped the ring onto my finger, stood up, and pulled me into his arms.
