Nolan continued explaining, “I only asked for a divorce because I was afraid the Steeles would try to hurt you.”

I blinked.

“I wanted to keep you somewhere safe, somewhere that looked like it had nothing to do with me. That way, the Steeles wouldn’t have noticed you. Then, after dealing with everything, I would’ve brought you back.”

[So the divorce was to protect Lyra!]

[Hold up-he said he was worried the Steeles would go after Lyra. He didn’t mention Celia at all.)

I thought about it and asked, “What about Celia?”

Nolan’s gaze suddenly sharpened. “There’s nothing between her and me.”

“But three years ago, didn’t you get drunk at that bar-”

“That wasn’t because of Celia.” He cut me off, his voice suddenly dropping low. “It was because of you.”

I froze.

He looked at me, his eyes slowly turning red around the rims. “Three years ago, when I got wasted at that bar, it wasn’t because Celia left the country. It was because… I wanted to be sure that you would find me.”

[So Lyra didn’t just happen to pick Nolan up. He orchestrated everything!]

“I already knew who you were three years ago. Long before that, actually. One time, you helped an old man who’d fallen on the street. I happened to be walking by. You kneeled and wiped the dirt off his hands, not grossed out at all. Right then, I thought, I want to marry her,” Nolan murmured.

[Lyra was never a stand-in. Never!]

My mouth opened as my brain buffered. “So… you never saw me as somebody’s replacement?”

“Never,” he said firmly. “You’re the only one I’ve ever loved.”

[So it was all one big misunderstanding from the start!]

I was quiet for a long time-so long that Nolan started getting nervous, his fingers tapping faster and faster against the edge of the table.

“So…” I finally drawled. “You’ve loved me all along?”

Nolan’s eyes turned even redder. “Yeah. It’s you. It’s always been you.

“I don’t want to run away anymore. I used to think that I could shoulder everything alone, but now that you’re pregnant, there’s

no way I’ll let you and the baby take any risks.”

He took my hand, his gaze steady as he went on, “I’m going back to the Steele family.”

[The CEO is going to reclaim his throne!]

Nolan told me that he would go back, but only on his terms. Firstly, he would get absolute decision making power. Secondly, my safety and the baby’s safety had to be guaranteed.

“My grandfather agreed to my conditions,” Nolan said. “But he had one request-you have to move into the Steele estate. ”

I frowned. “The estate? Isn’t it going to be super boring there?”

Nolan laughed. “It won’t be boring. I had them put in a little garden for you. You can grow flowers and vegetables there.”
