Back to the Day I Protected the Alpha Over My Mate Chapter 07 Laying the Trap

After becoming the Beta, my days were like a we!! – run clock.

At 5 am, I’d inspect the Northern Border Outpost.

By 7 am, I was back at the main castle, organizing the supply list.

Meetings at 9 am, and at 11 am, I’d count herbs and weapons in the warehouse.

At 2 pm, I’d patrol the Eastern Border, and before 6 pm, I’d put the day’s report on Kane’s desk.

These tasks filled my days, leaving me so tired I’d fall asleep as soon as my head hit the pillow.

But I never forgot Dylan. The look he gave me when dragged out of the ward was burned in my mind.

He said he’d return, and I knew he would. I wasn’t going to wait for him.

In the fourth month, I asked Kane for permission to do intelligence reconnaissance.

As Beta, I was in charge of border patrols and intelligence gathering, but “gathering” was passive, while “reconnaissance” was active.

Kane glanced at me, didn’t ask why, and approved.

I picked three trustworthy werewolves: Lane, who’d sneered at me before but was now my second – in – command; old Hagen, the lame veteran from the Northern Border Outpost with a super – sensitive nose; and Ira, the only female werewolf in the patrol team who’d been kind to me.

The four of us formed an unofficial team to find Dylan.

Finding him wasn’t too hard.

Expelled from the Graymoon Pack, he had no identity, so no pack would take him.

He could only go to the uninhabited north or a rival pack.

Hagen found the first clue.

On night duty at the Northern Border Outpost, he caught an unfamiliar werewolf scent, not from our pack or a passing lone wolf.

It had traces of Dylan, like someone who’d traveled far, still carrying another’s smell.

“Dylan came looking for someone,” Hagen said, carving the scent description on a Memory Stone and giving it to me. “The other was careful, using mud and herbs to mask pheromones.

But I smelled it on the battlefield when I was young. It’s from the Pale Moon Pack.”

The Pale Moon Pack was our age-old enemy.

They took in any expetted werewolf, no matter their origin or crimes, as they needed cannon fodder.

Anyone hating the Graymoon Pack was their weapon.

I went to Kane.”Dylan’s in the Pale Moon Pack,” I said bluntly. Kane, polishing his silver dagger, paused.

The blade glinted coldly under the Moonstone Lamp.”Sure?”

“Positive. Hagen detected the Pale Moon Pack’s scent with Dylan’s near the Northern Border Outpost, lurking in the shadows. He’s looking for a weak point.”Kane sheathed the dagger and walked to the window.

Moonlight through the shutters cast light and shadow on his face.”What’s your plan?”

“Keep an eye on him.

He thinks he’s hidden, but I can see him. I know him better than anyone in the Pale Moon Pack. I can predict when

and where he’ll strike.”

“Predict?”

“More than that. I can calculate.

“I lived with him for three years. I know his fears, desires, and his impulsive mistakes.”

Kane was silent for a moment.

“What do you need?”

“Your cooperation.

“I want to strike first, draw him out, and wipe him and the Pale Moon Pack out.”

Kane looked at me, his amber eyes hard to read.”You’re more of a hunter than he is.”

“I’m not a hunter.” I said,” I just don’t want to be prey.”
