Back to the Day I Protected the Alpha Over My Mate Chapter 01 Second Chance at Redemption

Graymoon’s Alpha was under attack. My mate, Beta Dylan, was off rescuing his lover, Bailey, from Rogues. I didn’t bother with the Mind Link. Seven months pregnant, I shielded the Alpha myself until help arrived.

In my past life, I’d called him. He chose me over her. He got promoted to Elder. But Bailey, left behind, was brutalized by the Rogues and killed herself.

Outwardly, Dylan stayed the same. But the day I went into labor, he threw me into the Incinerator.

As I burned, I screamed for answers. He just watched, cold as ice. “The Alpha is so powerful. He had it handled. Why did you call me back?”

“If you hadn’t,” he said, “Bailey would still be alive.”

“For what she suffered, I’ll make you pay a hundred times over!”

My child and I were burned alive. Then, I woke up—back at the moment the Alpha was attacked…

“Stay calm! Guard the Alpha!” Elder Ramon shouted.

Seeing the enemy close in, I instinctively stepped back.

But then it hit me—I was really reborn. Back at the attack. Back at the moment, I could change everything!

Remembering my past death, I didn’t even think about calling Dylan. Seven months pregnant, I threw myself in front of a killing blow meant for the Alpha.

The shock—and gratitude—in his eyes told me I’d made the right move.

My mate, Beta Dylan, was supposed to protect the Alpha.

But when the attack came, he vanished. He’d ditched his post to comfort his lover, Bailey, who was being harassed by some Rogue.

In my past life, I warned him through the Mind Link, terrified that the Alpha would punish him.

But after saving the Alpha, he accused me of sucking up to climb the ranks. He flung me into the Incinerator, where the pack punished criminals. My baby and I were burned alive.

I planted myself in front of the Alpha. Even as the enemy’s claws sank into my swollen belly, I didn’t give an inch.

Dylan had taken most of the guards, but the Alpha still had backup. If I could just hold out until they got here, I’d live.

The Alpha was wounded and poisoned with Wolfsbane, cut off from his wolf. He knew his death would destroy the pack. Reluctantly, he hid behind me.

Seven months pregnant, I felt the baby kick. In my past life, I heard those kicks turn into screams through the Mind Link as we burned.

The claws ripping into me now hurt just as much. I could feel the baby’s heartbeat fading fast.

Soon, boots pounded the floor.

“Get the Healer!” the Alpha roared. “Now!”

He looked down at me. “You’re Dylan’s mate. I remember you. Where is he?”

I shook my head, too weak to speak. Blood poured from my gut. My eyelids drooped, and I let them close.

“Lady Lara, stay awake!” The Healer swiped sweat from his brow, his voice cracking. “You can’t sleep! Think of your husband! Your child! They need you!”

The Alpha cut in. “You saved my life. I’ll see you’re well rewarded when you heal.

“Hold on! I’ve sent for Dylan.”

I managed a weak, bitter smile. Dylan valued me and our baby less than a single hair on Bailey’s head. The moment I took that claw for him, I knew the child was lost.

And Dylan? He wasn’t coming.

Just then, the messenger burst in and fell to his knees, head bowed.

The Alpha’s face darkened. “Where is he?!”

Ramon flinched. “The Beta refuses to come. He says Lady Lara… shouldn’t use such tactics to win his pity.”

To Dylan, I was nothing. Not even worth a fraction of Bailey.

He’d ditched the Alpha’s elite guard just to play hero for her, abandoning his duty. Now that I was bleeding out, why would he care? If he loved her so much, why did he ever claim me as his mate?

Rage boiled over. I coughed up more blood.

The Healer turned to the Alpha, desperate. “Lady Lara is far too agitated! She can’t be alone! If she keeps losing it like this, she won’t last the hour!”

The Alpha looked at me, swallowing his rage. “Tell him that’s an order,” he snarled at Ramon. “If he doesn’t come, I’ll make him regret it.”

His face was murderous. He should have had guards everywhere, but he was alone. Even his Beta had abandoned him.

I’d saved his life, and he couldn’t even control his own Beta. For an Alpha, this was a slap in the face.

Ten minutes later, Ramon returned. He wasn’t alone.

I forced my eyes open—and saw her. Daisy. Bailey’s maid. A face I knew all too well from my past life.
