After I Blew Out My Sister’s Candle, My Parents Stopped Loving Me Chapter 04

My father jerked the steering wheel hard, and Chloe, who was leaning forward, slammed her head against the window.

She cried out in pain. “Dad, slow down.”

My mother immediately reached over to rub her forehead, her voice dripping with blame.

“What is wrong with you? Why are you in such a rush?”

“Look at my poor Chloe. Her forehead’s already turning red.”

My father kept his eyes on the road and said nothing, his expression grave.

Tears welled in Chloe’s eyes, but she still shook her head like the good daughter she always was. “Mom, I’m okay. It doesn’t even hurt anymore.”

“Dad’s just worried about Ellie.”

My mother let out a cold laugh. “A man in his forties, and he still panics like a novice over her drama.”

“Ellie knows exactly how to play people. Leaving the lights off when she’s home alone so she can look pitiful. I’m sick of it.”

“She’s probably hiding in her room glued to her iPad.”

“How is she so sneaky? Every time I changed the password, she figured it out again.”

“She drives me crazy every single day. At this rate, she’ll be the death of me.”

Hearing that, my father eased off the gas.

I looked at my mother’s furious face, guilt flooding me all over again.

I shouldn’t have sneaked onto the iPad and made you angry, Mom.

I promise I would have been the perfect daughter. I would’ve made you happy.

But I didn’t have a from now on anymore.

My mother still wasn’t done. She pulled up the security feed on her phone and snapped, “Ellie Whitmore, I’m warning you. Put the iPad down right now and clean that cake off the floor.”

She stared at the screen for a full minute.

The house stayed completely still.

At once, her chest started heaving. “She’s really ignoring me?”

“If she’s this impossible to control now, what’s she going to become when she’s older? A criminal?”

My father tried to calm her. “Maybe Ellie fell asleep.”

My mother ignored him and screamed at the speaker, “Ellie Whitmore, if that mess isn’t cleaned up before I get home, I’ll throw you out with the trash tonight!”

The car pulled into the private garage at Silver Brook Estates not long after that.

Before it had even come to a full stop, my mother shoved the door open, jumped out, and ran for the elevator.

When she got inside, the floor was still covered in a mess.

Her eyes red with anger, she kicked my bedroom door open and strode to the bed, yanking the blanket back.

“Ellie Whitmore, get out of this house!”

Then she froze.

There was nothing under the covers except a stuffed bunny.

She switched on the light and looked around the room, but I was nowhere to be seen.

Then she searched the rest of the house.

Still nothing.

My father came in holding Chloe’s hand, and my mother frowned. “She’s not here.”

“She didn’t sneak off to your parents’ place, did she?”

As she spoke, she scrolled frantically for her mother-in-law’s contact.

Then something seemed to hit my father all at once.

He broke into a run toward the attic and stopped dead in front of the closed door, staring at it in horror.
