When Skyler saw that I still wasn’t reacting, she stepped 

toward me. A bodyguard held out an arm and stopped her 

three steps away. 

“Grace, we were engaged. We were supposed to get 

married.” 

“Think about how good I’ve been to you. I brought you coffee every morning. I always did what you said. I never 

once raised my voice at you.” 

“That ring, I know it was small, but I saved for three months 

to buy it.” 

“Grace, why didn’t you tell me who your parents were? If I 

had known, I never would have…” 

I looked him in the eye. “If you had known, what?” 

Cole couldn’t answer. I smiled. 

“Why would I mention it? It’s not something I earned. What’s 

there to say?” 

Cole finally managed to stammer out, “But… if you had told 

me, I would have treated you even better.” 

“I never would have let Skyler into the company. I wouldn’t 

have…” 

I cut him off. “You wouldn’t have what?” 

“Wouldn’t have fooled around with another woman while you 

were engaged to me? Or wouldn’t have stood there while 

she bullied me?” 

Cole had nothing to say. 

My dad said two words to the bodyguards behind him. “Take 

them.” 

Both Cole and Skyler went pale. 

Cole backed away. “Mr. Thompson. Where are you taking us? 

I’m sorry. I’m really sorry.” 

My dad didn’t even look at him. He turned and walked out. 

My mom took my hand and followed. When we passed 

Skyler, she suddenly said dismissively, “You win, Grace.” 

“With parents like yours, of course you can pretend to be 

above it all. You don’t have to do anything. Just stand there 

and look calm.” 

“Your dad hits people for you, and your mom lies for you.” 

I stopped walking. I turned and looked at her. Skyler’s face 

was swollen. Her eyes were full of bitterness and anger. 

I gave a faint smile. “I didn’t win.” 

“Because I was never competing with you. I never even 

entered the game. There’s no winning or losing.” 

“But you’re right about one thing. With parents like mine, I 

learned a long time ago not to waste a single glance on 

people who aren’t worth it.” 

I turned and walked away. 

But clearly, my parents weren’t done being angry.
