I pulled Kian inside, locking the door behind us, shutting out 

Asher and his shouts. 

Kian stood quietly behind me, silent for a long time. 

I felt calm. 

The day I left Aurora Hills, I’d felt light, free. But never at 

peace. 

I’d known it wasn’t over. 

That’s why I’d decided to live apart from Mabel. 

Now, I finally felt safe. 

When I woke up, Kian had made breakfast. He wasn’t at the 

shop for once. 

He’d even bought the soy milk and fried dough sticks I’d 

mentioned once. 

“Eat up. A full stomach makes a happy heart.” 

I sat down, looking at him. 

“You heard everything last night?” 

“Yeah. All of it.” 

I fell quiet. Kian pushed the soy milk toward me. 

“It wasn’t your fault.” 

Not my fault? 

I froze. Growing up, whenever Asher ignored me, Hudson 

would snap the same thing. 

“Elowen, have you ever thought it’s your fault?” 

“Why can Liora get along with Silas, but you can’t with 

Asher?” 

More than Asher, Hudson’s words had hurt me the most. 

Then I’d figured it out. 

It wasn’t me. 

It was them. 

I smiled, eating quickly. 

When I finished, I looked at Kian seriously. 

“Thank you.” 

Kian said, 

“Thank me by taking me out to dinner?” 

I glanced at the blooming flowers and clear sky in the yard. 

“Okay. Dinner it is, Kian.”
