My Online Boyfriend Turned Out to Be My Billionaire Boss Chapter 02

I cared a lot about the interview the next day.

Normally, every night, I had to stare at his abs photos for a while before I could fall asleep. That night, not only did I switch my phone to airplane mode, I even put on a sleep mask.

The next day, the interview did not go smoothly.

They asked me a bunch of professional questions, but I was an English Literature major.

I had no choice but to force my way through with a pile of pretty but hollow words.

That afternoon, I unexpectedly received an offer.

During onboarding, my mentor told me they had originally wanted another girl, but she suddenly backed out, so the opportunity fell to me.

So yes, sometimes life really did require a little luck.

The company’s benefits were good. New hires got ten days of PTO right away.

The pay was high too. Fifteen thousand dollars before tax, guaranteed weekends off, and no mandatory overtime.

Most importantly, it was close to home and in a great location.

At noon, my mentor gave me a meal card with one hundred fifty dollars on it, only usable in the cafeteria.

In the spirit of penny-pinching, I decided to treat the company like home and eat every meal there.

[Baby, how’s your first day? Did it go well? Have you eaten? What did you eat? Did you miss me?]

The moment I sat down, my phone lit up.

My lunch buddy Amy’s eyes quickly darted over.

“Boyfriend checking in? Makes sense. You’re so pretty, and there are so many single men in this company. He should be nervous.”

“No, don’t talk nonsense.”

My face went red, and I forced myself to put down my phone.

Amy leaned closer with a grin.

“Several male coworkers already asked me about you this morning. They wanted your WhatsApp. I didn’t give it to them.”

“Please don’t! I have a boyfriend.”

I hurriedly clarified my status.

“What does your boyfriend do? Is he hot?”

Amy instantly perked up.

“I’ve never met him. We’re online dating.”

“How are you the same as Mr. Locke? Is everyone finding love online now?”

Amy had just gone through a breakup, so she sounded a little tempted.

“Mr. Locke?”

A fellow online dater. I immediately got nosy.

“Zachary Locke. One of the most powerful young entrepreneurs in New York. Twenty-eight, handsome, and loaded. A lot of women in our company have crushes on him. But Mr. Locke isn’t easy to talk to. He has high standards and a bad temper. He’s been gentler lately, though. I heard he got a girlfriend, also online.”

“Twenty-eight.”

Same age as Moonlight.

“Impressive, right? And he’s the only child in his family. The whole group will be his someday. No idea which woman is lucky enough to find a gold mine through online dating. Why don’t I have that kind of luck?”

Amy grew more excited as she spoke, so I silently switched my phone to silent mode.

When I finally replied, I was startled.

My screen was full of question marks and four missed voice calls.

Moonlight and I had always kept our relationship in its most primitive form.

We had never spoken on the phone.

Not because he didn’t want to.

Because I refused.

My heart was pounding. It took all my self-control not to call him back.

[Hubby, I’m eating with coworkers. Kimchi tofu stew, salmon, and scallion tofu. It’s my first day, and there’s a lot I need to get used to, so I might not be able to reply quickly. I’ll call you when I get home tonight.]

I hesitated for a long time before typing the last word.

Yes.

I wanted to hear his voice.

[Yay, baby is finally willing to call me! Can we video call? I really want to see baby. What time will baby be home?]

Greedy.

I sent a puppy shaking its head emoji.

[I just want to hear your voice. It’s my first day, so I can’t leave early. I’ll message you when I get home.]

[Baby is so good. Where’s baby’s company? Hubby will order you afternoon tea.]

I immediately panicked.

I was afraid he would suddenly show up and hide somewhere to spy on what I looked like.

So I quickly sent three puppy shaking its head emojis.

[Our company is very strict. We can’t eat during work hours. Let’s eat together when we meet someday.]

Moonlight believed me and sent another Venmo.

[Sure. What does baby want to eat? Anything that flies, runs, or swims, I’ll get it for you.]

His cheesy pickup lines and sugar-coated attacks made my head spin.

Even the air tasted sweet.

“What time is it? Why are you still here?”

A cold, magnetic voice sounded behind me.

I whipped around.

A tall, handsome man in a perfectly fitted suit was staring at me with a serious expression.

My heart skipped, and I panicked like a quail.

“I, I was making a call. I’m going back now.”

“Next time, go to HR and start the exit process yourself.”

“S-Sorry.”

His overpowering presence completely crushed me. It wasn’t until he walked away that I remembered to check the time.

1:01 p.m.

I was one minute late.

Was that man insane?

My eyes instantly reddened. I hated myself for being useless enough to get scared so easily.

So sad.

Boohoo.

When I returned to my desk, Amy told me Mr. Locke had arrived.

My heart immediately sank.

No way.

Was he the man who had just steamrolled me with his aura?

“Why are your eyes so red? Did you fight with your boyfriend?”

Amy saw me gripping my phone with a lifeless expression and naturally assumed that was the reason.

“No, no. Some dust got in my eyes.”

As soon as I said that, I rubbed my eyes hard with my hand.

Just then, my mentor, Mr. Johnson, came over.

“Lily, take these to Mr. Locke for his signature.”

“Me?”

I pointed at myself, my tongue knotting.

“What are you afraid of? You’re new. You should show your face in front of the boss.”

Mr. Johnson valued me. He was the one who had made the final decision to hire me.

As for why, maybe all the professional-grade flattery I gave yesterday had worked.
