The next morning, I saw two little desserts on the table.

They were from the bakery Noah and I had visited yesterday. They were expensive, twenty-eight dollars a slice.

Caleb was curled up on the sofa.

His legs were long, and the sofa at home was too short. His whole body was nearly folded in on itself.

Wait.

Caleb’s face looked very red.

Did he have a fever?

The moment I pulled my hand away from his forehead, the System screamed.

“Major angst beat. The male lead has a high fever, but the cruel ex-wife accuses him of being lazy and kicks him out.”

“Caleb drags his sick body to a TaskRabbit moving gig. The client is Serena Clarke. The heroine appears.”

“Serena notices his fever and gently gives him medicine. Caleb collapses, and Serena takes him to Cedars-Sinai and cares for him overnight.”

“You make so little money and still think you can lie around at home?”

As I scolded him, I lowered my voice and asked the System.

“System, look at him. He can’t even wake up. Are you sure he can stay conscious enough to move furniture?”

“If his brain burns out, will the heroine still want him?”

The System paused.

“Then… if there’s no other way, give him some medicine first. After that, wake him up and kick him out.”

But Caleb’s teeth were clenched shut. The medicine would not go in at all.

The moment I tried to feed him, he grabbed my hand and pulled me into his arms.

Caleb murmured softly.

“So cold… so warm…”

The System said, “What are you doing? This sickbed embrace is supposed to be Serena’s scene. Hurry up and hurt him. If you don’t complete this major angst beat, money will be deducted.”

I put the medicine in my mouth, leaned down, and kissed Caleb.

Then I pushed the medicine into his mouth hard.

Caleb opened his eyes through the haze, but his lips and teeth stayed tangled with mine, refusing to let go.

“So warm…”

Caleb’s Adam’s apple moved. His arms tightened around me, and in his daze, he pressed me beneath him.

The System buzzed in my head.

“He’s awake. Hurry up and hurt him. Make him cry. What a miserable male lead.”

I had just opened my mouth to scold him when Caleb’s lips stuck to mine again.

“Wife… I’m hot. Do you want…”

I simply turned over, pressed him down, and patted his face.

“What nonsense are you talking about? Who’s your wife? You’re a broke man. You can’t give me anything.”

Caleb casually pulled the sofa throw over me.

The System kept warning me in my head.

“Do the task. Hurt him. Hurry up and hurt him.”

I slapped my forehead.

“Isn’t this abuse? I’m doing it. Don’t you dare deduct my money.”

I tore open Caleb’s shirt, revealing his firm chest.

Wiping my nose, I pinched him and humiliated him.

“You’re gone all day, and this is all you make? Don’t tell me you’ve been slacking off.”

“Hmm? Answer me.”

An hour later, Caleb’s eyes were red at the corners, and there seemed to be a thin sheen of sweat on his forehead.

“System, I took advantage of his weakness and humiliated him from above.”

“He clearly didn’t want it while he was sick, but I held him down and forced him. He must hate me to death.”

After Caleb took the medicine and broke into a sweat, he was no longer burning up.

I kicked him off the sofa.

“You can’t earn money, and now your body is useless too. You really are trash. Get out.”

“I don’t want to see you.”

Caleb got up from the sofa, put on his clothes, and left with his eyes lowered.

The System was silent for a long moment.

“…”

“Well, how should I put this? For a man, this is a devastating humiliation.”

“His body and soul have both suffered extreme abuse. Task completed. Reward, fifteen thousand dollars.”
