“Who are you?” Savannah’s voice cracked with panic. “You don’t know what you’re talking about.” 

She grabbed Charles’s hand, begging. “Don’t listen to him, Charles. This is a real hospital record. It’s not fake.” 

She pointed at the doctor. “He’s obviously working for 

Jennifer. He’s trying to trick you.” 

The doctor didn’t react. “The doctor who signed these records 

is Samuel Peterson. He’s still an intern. I’m his supervising 

physician.” 

Savannah went pale. 

Someone in the crowd yelled, “Samuel is here!” 

Someone pushed a young man onto the stage. 

Facing his mentor, Samuel couldn’t lie. “My cousin begged me,” he admitted, his voice breaking. “Please, don’t report 

1. me. I’ll never do it again.” 

Savannah’s face was white, and she couldn’t deny it anymore. 

Charles lunged at her again, grabbing her bruised neck. “You lied to me. Why?” 

Savannah shoved him back as hard as she could, crying. 

“Why? Because I love you, you idiot! I did this because I love 

you. I took all this shame because I wanted to save you.” 

“I didn’t expect Jennifer to sit there and take it all the way to 

the wedding. I thought I could just be your quiet mistress. But 

then you wanted to give her father your kidney.” 

“Enough!” Charles shouted. 

But Savannah didn’t stop. She pointed at me. “Her father is 

dying anyway. How many years does he have left? Why should you sacrifice your body for him?” 

“I love you more than she does. I couldn’t stand to see your hurt yourself just to keep her happy.” 

“So I exposed everything. I made sure the divorce would 

happen. I told her you gave me all your money, and I would have given half of it back just to stop you from donating that kidney.” 

“I did this for you. What more do you want from me?” 

I felt like I’d been struck by lightning. 

I had no idea my father was sick. 

“Is she telling the truth?” 

Charles couldn’t hide from my stare. “Dad didn’t want you to worry. We both agreed to keep it from you.” 

He tried to calm me. “I’m a match. The surgery should work. I’ll give him my kidney. Don’t worry.” 

I couldn’t think; I turned and ran out of the hotel. 

Someone recorded everything and put it online. 

My parents saw it. 

My mom said I should give Charles another chance. 

My dad said I should follow my heart, not worry about him. 

I went to the hospital and got tested. By some miracle, I was a match too. 

Amanda had her brother, the lawyer, start the divorce. 

That’s when I learned the doctor at the wedding was a 

coworker’s father. She’d asked him to come and help me. 

Charles didn’t want the divorce and begged me to stay. 

He took every penny back from Savannah and demanded she terminate the pregnancy. 

He promised he’d change. 

But I didn’t waver, the divorce was happening. 

On the day of my father’s surgery, I found out Charles had 

already donated his kidney. 

He said it was the only way he could make things right, that he 

didn’t want me to risk my health. 

With the lawyer’s help, the divorce went through. Charles 

walked away with nothing. 

Outside the courthouse, he said to me, “Today is a new 

beginning for both of us. I’m going to be a better man. I’ll win you back.” 

I just smiled, tired. 

“Some mistakes can’t be fixed,” I said.
