The Daughter He Abandoned Called Him A Stranger Chapter 07

The Daughter He Abandoned Called Him A Stranger Chapter 07

When the memories finally settled, the living room was quiet

in the warmth of the afternoon sun.

I let out a long breath, as if I had finally released something I

had carried for twenty years.

Claire was already sobbing. She held my hand tightly, her voice hoarse from crying.

“Mom… I never knew. I never knew you suffered that much.”

I raised my hand and gently wiped the tear from her face with

my fingertips, trying to make my voice sound lighter.

“That was so long ago. It’s ancient history now. Look at me.

I’m still here, aren’t I?”

I smiled, trying to ease the heaviness in the room, and began

telling her what happened afterward.

“The divorce went more smoothly than I expected. I had

prepared for the worst. I was even afraid I might lose custody

of you.”

I paused, remembering how humiliatingly easy it had been.

“In the end, your grandmother thought you were just a girl, a burden the Whitmore family didn’t need.”

“And Ms. Lancaster made it very clear that she had no interest

in becoming someone else’s stepmother the moment she married Nathaniel. She thought you would be an eyesore.”

My voice stayed calm, touched with faint sarcasm. “So they

could hardly wait to hand you over to me. I didn’t ask for anything else. I only took you, my design drafts, and a few bags of clothes.”

“I moved out of that huge house with you and rented a small apartment.”

“The beginning was hard. I felt as if I had been cut off from the world for too long, and even holding a pencil again felt unfamiliar.”

“Every resume I sent out went unanswered. When people did

talk about me, they whispered that I was the woman Nathaniel Whitmore had thrown away.”

“But I didn’t give up.” I felt something in me come back to

life. “I told myself, Evelyn Hart, you once won awards on your own talent. You don’t get to fall apart.”

“While taking care of you, I took every small freelance job I could find. I drew illustrations, designed logos, and even did ghost design work for tiny studios.”

“After I got you to sleep at night, I sat under a desk lamp and worked until dawn, revising my portfolio again and again.”

I squeezed Claire’s hand, my tone growing steadier.

“Little by little, opportunities came. Old clients remembered

what I could do and referred projects to me. The work I

designed independently slowly began to gain attention.”

“It was as if the part of me that had been buried for so long

started coming back the moment I picked up my pencil again.”

“There was something deeply comforting about earning a

living through my own work.”

“Later, I opened my own small studio. It wasn’t large, but every dollar I earned and every bit of recognition I received

was clean, honest, and truly mine.”

I patted the back of Claire’s hand. “So don’t feel sorry for me.

Leaving someone who makes you wither is like repotting a

plant that has been suffocating for too long.”

“It hurts at first. The roots get torn. But if they’re still alive,

the plant can grow again, stronger than before.”

Claire nodded, her expression tinged with sadness.

“When I was growing up, I saw his interviews in magazines. I

used to wonder if maybe he was an impressive man after all. I

never imagined he was such a bastard.”

After a long silence, she whispered, “Mom, I’m so proud of

you. You shine a thousand times brighter than any woman

with the title Mrs. Whitmore.”

I smiled and shook my head without the slightest hesitation.

“Not for a single second.”

“Because he gave me the most precious gift of my life. You.”

Claire leaned against my shoulder and held my arm tightly.

After a long silence, she whispered, “Mom, you’re my pride.

You shine a thousand times brighter than any Mrs. Whitmore

with a fancy title.”

Outside the window, the sunset slowly dyed the sky a warm

shade of orange.

For the first time in a long while, the room felt warm all the way through.

After everything we had survived, there was finally light again.
