The Daughter He Abandoned Called Him A Stranger Chapter 06

The Daughter He Abandoned Called Him A Stranger Chapter 06

I pulled out a tissue and gently dabbed away the tears on Claire’s face, then continued the story.

That morning, I stared at my pale, exhausted reflection in the

mirror.

Then I looked down at the two unmistakable lines on the

pregnancy test.

My legs went weak, and I slid slowly down the cold tiled wall until I was sitting on the floor.

The sunlight outside was blinding, yet all I felt was a chill spreading through my entire body.

And still, in the part of me I thought had already given up, a pathetic little hope stirred.

This child proved that Nathaniel had not completely rejected

  1. me.

Maybe, just maybe, it could bring him back.

My hands were shaking when I called him, and I hated how

desperate I sounded. “Nathaniel, I’m pregnant.”

The other end of the line went silent for a long time.

So long that I almost thought the call had dropped.

Then he finally spoke, his voice giving nothing away.

“Have the baby.”

No concern.

No surprise.

Just those three words.

But to me, they felt like a lifeline.

I was naive enough to believe this child could make him come home and put our family back together.

I tore up the divorce papers I had been about to sign and told

myself to endure a little longer for the sake of both my

children.

But reality was even crueler.

Nathaniel did not come back to our family because of this new

life. If anything, he grew worse.

During my entire pregnancy, the number of times he came

home could be counted on one hand.

What kept me company were news stories of him and Chloe appearing together again and again, along with those painful photos on social media.

He took her skiing in Aspen and diving in the Maldives.

He had once refused to take me to those places, saying our daughter was too young and needed him at home. Now he

went eagerly with another woman.

I stayed alone in that empty villa, enduring morning sickness,

swelling, and a body growing heavier by the day.

Worse than any of it was the suspicion that kept eating away at

  1. me.

The moment I truly lost all hope came one month before my

due date.

It was a family gathering I could not avoid.

I dragged my heavy body there, planning only to show my face

and leave.

But Chloe was there too, sitting openly beside Nathaniel as if it

were the most natural thing in the world, acting intimate with him in front of everyone.

While the others were busy exchanging greetings, I saw Chloe bend down with a fake smile. Then, with her perfectly manicured fingers, she secretly pinched Claire’s soft cheek

with cruel force.

Claire’s eyes filled with tears from the pain.

My heart tightened, and I was about to step forward.

Then I heard Chloe lower her voice and hiss at Claire.

“You little brat. Your mommy and daddy are getting divorced soon, and after that, you’ll never see your mother again. Remember this. From now on, I’m going to be your mother.”

Claire burst into terrified sobs.

In that instant, rage hit me so hard I could barely think.

How dare she.

How dare she hurt my child like that.

Almost on instinct, I rushed over with one hand supporting my belly, trying to pull Claire away from Chloe and shield her

behind me.

But the second I took Claire’s arm, Chloe let out a sharp cry as if I had shoved her with all my strength.

She staggered backward several steps and crashed heavily to

the floor.

Then she immediately clutched her wrist and sobbed to Nathaniel and the others, who had all turned at the sound.

“Nathaniel, she… why did she push me? I only wanted to talk to the child. She insulted me, called me a homewrecker, and

then she hit me.”

“You’re lying! I didn’t!” I was shaking with rage as I held my

frightened daughter tightly.

I was absolutely certain my hand had not touched Chloe at all.’

But Nathaniel had already rushed over in a few long strides.

All he saw was Chloe on the floor, looking pained and pitiful,

and me standing beside her, shaking with rage.

He did not ask a single question. He seized my arm so hard it

felt as if he might crush the bone.

Then he yanked me backward. “Evelyn Hart! Are you done acting insane? You would do this in front of the child?”

I was more than eight months pregnant, and my balance was

already unsteady.

With that furious, careless pull, I stumbled backward hard.

My lower back slammed into the sharp corner of the heavy

mahogany coffee table behind me, and then I collapsed to the

floor.

A tearing pain exploded through my abdomen and swept

through my entire body.

I curled in on myself from the pain, cold sweat breaking out all

over me.

“Blood! Mommy’s bleeding!” Claire screamed through her

tears.

Only then did Nathaniel freeze.

He stared at the bright red blood spreading beneath me.

His face went deathly pale.

I was rushed to the hospital, drifting in and out through waves

of agony.

Lying on the cold operating table, I heard the doctors speaking urgently.

“The impact caused a placental abruption.”

“She’s hemorrhaging.”

“We can’t save the baby.”

Tears and sweat soaked the pillow beneath my head.

I lost the child who had been inside me for nearly nine

months.

A boy who had almost made it to full term.

And when I was wheeled out of the operating room, so weak

that even breathing felt difficult, I heard Nathaniel in the

hallway.

He was softly comforting Chloe, who was still sobbing.

“Don’t be scared. It’s over now. Does your wrist still hurt?”

He did not even come to look at me.

Between the pain in my body and the devastation in my heart, there was nothing left of me to hold together.

In that moment, something inside me died along with my

unborn child.
