I woke from a nightmare. 

When I opened my eyes, I was in a hospital room. My parents were sitting beside me, their faces worn with exhaustion. 

Seeing me awake, my mother was overcome with emotion. 

“Lorette, you’re finally awake. I thought I’d never see you open your eyes again!” 

She looked like she’d been crying, her eyes red and swollen. 

My father squeezed my hand tightly. 

“Lorette, can you hear me? Does your body hurt?” 

I stared at my father, my heart jolting. 

I couldn’t understand how, in just one night, he seemed to 

have aged ten years. 

I tried to speak to them, but when I opened my mouth, no 

sound came out. 

My throat was dry and raw, as if it had been scraped with sandpaper. 

As if sensing my confusion, my mother brushed her hand over my forehead and said softly, “Lorette, it’s okay now. It’s all 

over.” 

All over? What was over? The car crash? Or Andrew and that 

woman? 

If everything was over, why were my parents‘ faces etched 

with such sorrow? 

I wanted to ask, but I couldn’t. I could only stare at my mother blankly. 

Afraid my mother would say too much, my father quickly pulled her back. 

“The doctor said Lorette’s condition still needs monitoring.” 

“We can talk about those things when she’s feeling better.” 

Those things? What things? 

Where was Andrew? What about that woman? 

What had happened while I was unconscious? What was going on now? 

I lay in the hospital bed, my mind in chaos. 

My mother’s unspoken words and my father’s deliberate evasion wove an impenetrable net, shrouding me in a thick 

fog. 

Every time I tried to speak, only broken gasps escaped my 

throat. 

Every time I looked to them for answers, I got only perfunctory replies. 

“You need to rest right now. Don’t think too much.” 

“You’ll know everything once you’re better.” 

During my stay in the hospital, Andrew, who had always doted 

on me, never came once. 

No one mentioned what had happened that day, either. 

Days passed. 

My condition improved, and I could finally make hoarse, weak sounds. 

As my mother wiped my body, I forced the words out with all my strength, “Where is Andrew?” 

My mother’s hand trembled, and the towel almost fell to the floor. 

She quickly looked down, avoiding my gaze, her voice tight, “He… he has things to take care of. He can’t get away.” 

“Focus on getting better. Don’t worry about him.” 

Things he can’t get away from? 

“Is it because of that woman?” 

At my question, my mother’s eyes instantly welled up. She 

spun around, her shoulders shaking. 

It was several seconds before she turned back, forcing a smile. 

“No. Lorette, it’s all over.” 

“That woman will never appear again. Everything will be 

okay.” 

That woman will never appear again? What did that mean? 

Had Andrew broken up with her? But he’d clearly loved her so 

much. 

What on earth was going on? 

I was certain my mother was hiding something from me. 

Why else would she have turned away to wipe her tears? 

But what could be so terrible that Andrew hadn’t shown up in days, and my parents were keeping it from me at all costs?
