Life Erased, the Mafia Queen Returns Chapter 09

After coaxing Jasper to take his medicine and making him promise repeatedly that I wouldn’t sneak away, I hesitated, 

then returned to Vincent’s room. 

Not because of anything else–absolutely not. 

I just didn’t want to see some absurd headline tomorrow: 

“Mafia Don Dies at Home After Drinking While Administering 

Medicine.” 

Pushing open the half–closed door, I saw Vincent sleeping quietly on the bed. I tugged at the black blanket beneath him. 

Good. It didn’t budge. 

I gave up with full self–awareness and wrapped him loosely, turning him into a cocoon. 

In the dim bedroom, I watched him silently for a moment, 

then prepared to leave. 

The phone on the bedside table rang. 

Seth. 

This call wasn’t mine to answer, and I was about to turn away –but a hand grabbed my wrist from behind. 

The blanket slipped from his shoulders. He held me tightly, eyes dark, fixed on the ringing phone. 

As if afraid I would run, he dragged me to the door, locking it in front of me, and poured the remaining wine from the bottle over the phone, letting it ring futilely before dying with a black 

screen. 

When he was done, he turned to me and, without warning, 

said: 

“Hide.” 

I thought Seth had arrived, and instinctively replied, flushed 

with embarrassment: 

“No need. I’ll leave right away.” 

Vincent didn’t respond, didn’t release me. 

He first tried leading me straight to the walk–in closet, but the path wobbled—it was clear he wasn’t fully alert. 

The closet was semi–open, no place to hide, so he wasn’t satisfied. He dragged me back into the bedroom, searching, 

pausing at the bed. Then he shoved me into the blanket, 

cocooning me tightly. 

I barely poked my head out when I heard him mutter: 

“I can’t. I have to hide too.” 

I blinked. “Why…?” 

Even in his own home, he had to hide? 

He crawled into the blanket with me. Darkness swallowed 

everything. I heard him exhale and mutter to himself: 

“Now nothing will happen.” 

My heartbeat skipped. 

Suddenly, a memory hit me. 

Six years ago, Vincent almost split with the De Santis Family for me. Then he got a call from Seth about a supposed 

life–threatening emergency. 

It was false. Vincent was trapped at home and didn’t come 

back. That night, I slipped while leaving, and was rushed to the hospital to give birth. 

After that, storms came, everything changed. 

My parents had the accident, Vincent’s love and hate twisted, and fate’s cruelty shattered me completely. 

I didn’t know what to do. I was just… exhausted. 

A hot fingertip traced my cheek. His breath was burning, yet 

careful as he wiped away my tears. 

“Don’t be afraid. They won’t find us,” he said, solemnly. 

I realized I was crying, but no words came out. I choked out: 

“I hate you.” 

Hate you for appearing again, hate you for squeezing back into my life, hate you because you haven’t done anything wrong- 

haven’t even given me a reason to. 

Vincent remained calm, murmuring: 

“Oh.” 

Then, puzzled, he asked, 

“Were you hit by the emotion–reversing spell too?” 

My tears poured harder. 

Seeing my silence, perhaps to shift my attention, he said 

softly: 

“Shh… it’s gone.” 

There were no flowers, no magic here. 

He hadn’t told me to hide to protect me from anyone. 

He had said it because- 

Hide. 

Don’t let fate find you.
