“What happened?” My father’s voice dropped, serious. 

“Nothing much. The dog I raised bit me.” 

He didn’t press. 

“Understood,” he said, his voice grim. 

Then he softened. “Aria, if you’ve been wronged, come home. 

Your mom and I are here.” 

“We’ll always be your backup.” 

My eyes burned. 

Landon and I met freshman year. He was a scholarship kid 

from a rural county, dirt poor. Every day, he’d load up a tray with nothing but a plain roll and whatever free soup the dining
