She Became The Perfect Wife So She Could Disappear Forever Chapter 02

I had a dream.

I dreamt of two years ago, back when I was six months pregnant with our second child.

I had come home early from my prenatal checkup that day. The moment I pushed open the bedroom door, I found Dominic and Maeve in my bed.

Their clothes were a mess, their breathing heavy and uneven.

“Callie…” Dominic scrambled up, panicked. “It’s not what it looks like.”

Before I could hear his excuses, a sharp, agonizing cramp hit my abdomen.

Blood began to streak down my legs. Dominic’s face turned ashen as he rushed toward me.

“Call an ambulance,” I managed to say.

Maeve huddled in the corner, clutching the sheets to her chest, her face pale. “Dominic, I’m scared of blood…”

“Go outside,” Dominic told her, his voice softening with an instinctive tenderness.

Only then did he turn back to me. “Callie, hang on, I’m calling…”

Another wave of excruciating pain hit.

As I collapsed, I saw Dominic’s first instinct was to shield Maeve, to keep her from seeing the blood.

The ambulance arrived, but I lost my daughter.

In the hospital room, Dominic told me he was sorry, over and over again.

“Send her away,” I said.

“What?”

“Send Maeve abroad. Make sure she never comes back.” I looked him dead in the eye. “I never want to see her face again.”

He agreed.

The month after Maeve was sent away, Dominic was good to me. So good it felt like we were back in the early days of our marriage.

I thought that was the end of it.

Until I found out that Maeve’s so-called trip abroad had only taken her to a neighboring city.

Dominic went there on “business trips” every single week. His phone was filled with countless photos of her.

The first time I lost it and screamed at him, he smashed a glass and roared back, “Callie, don’t push it! Maeve has already given up so much. What more do you want?”

“I want her completely out of your life!”

“Impossible,” he said. “She is the most important person in the world to me.”

From that day on, he stopped coming home.

The tabloids began running photos of him entering hotels with various women, every one of them bearing a slight resemblance to Maeve.

I called him incessantly. I went to his office time and again to find him.

He insulted me right in front of his secretary. “Look at yourself. You look like a hysterical harpy!”

Even Justin turned on me. “Mom, can you just stop making a scene? You’re making me a laughingstock at school.”

“Everyone says Dad is so incredible, and they wonder why he married a psychopath.” The fifteen-year-old’s gaze was chillingly cold. “Honestly? It’s embarrassing.”

That night, as I sat in the empty living room, I got a call from Maeve.

“Callie, Dominic asked me to check what brand of art supplies Justin likes. I’m in Paris right now, so I figured I’d pick some up for him.”

“How did you get my number?” I asked.

“Justin gave it to me,” she let out a soft laugh. “He’s such a sweet boy. He actually told me to spend more time with his father because you’re too busy.”

I hung up and went to knock on Justin’s door. “When did you meet Maeve?”

He was mid-game and didn’t even look up. “Last year. Dad took me to see her.”

“Why didn’t you ever tell me?”

“Tell you for what? So you could go crazy again?” His tone was thick with impatience. “Maeve is graceful and beautiful. She’s way better than you.”

“Dad told me that if you hadn’t used those underhanded tricks years ago, he would’ve married her instead.”

The words hit me like a physical blow.

Justin must have realized he went too far. He turned around, his voice softening slightly. “Mom, I didn’t mean it like that… but you really do need to change. What man wants to be checked up on twenty-four-seven?”

I didn’t say a word. I just turned and walked out of his room.

The final explosion happened after I found out Dominic had bought a villa for Maeve.

I stormed into his office and demanded an explanation in front of the entire executive board.

He had security drag me out.

When he got home that night, he hauled me up to the attic. “Since you won’t take it the nice way, you can stay right here and reflect on your behavior.”

The lock clicked into place, and the darkness swallowed everything.

I screamed, I banged on the door, I begged until my voice went hoarse.

When Justin came home and heard the noise, he simply asked, “Dad, what’s Mom freaking out about now?”

“She’s in time-out,” Dominic said. “She needs to cool off.”

“About time,” Justin’s voice drifted through the door. “Mom, can you just keep it down for once? I have an exam tomorrow.”

That was when I fell silent.

I never knew that when a heart finally dies, it’s so incredibly quiet.
