My Husband Died Twice And Both Times He Lied Chapter 02

I clenched my hand into a fist and endured the sharp pain as I delivered the baby into my arms.

“When a woman is this close to giving birth, sex can affect labor. That’s normal.”

The moment I finished speaking, a deathly awkward silence fell.

Just then, the ambulance arrived. Gavin hurriedly carried Maya into it.

I looked down at the foul, metallic-smelling blood covering both my hands. Nausea surged through me, and I collapsed weakly to the ground.

When I woke again, Gavin was at my bedside, taking the lid off a cup of chicken noodle soup.

“I was too anxious this morning. I’m sorry, Evelyn.”

I stared at him, my throat painfully dry. “Don’t you owe me an explanation?”

The spoon he had lifted toward my lips stopped in midair. Gavin raised an eyebrow and answered with careless indifference.

“You saw it yourself, didn’t you? Maya and I faked our deaths, lied to you for three years, and had a child.”

“Why?” My voice broke with tears.

He sighed. “Why what, Evelyn? All this time, you were the one being protected. In school, Maya chased off the creeps who harassed you. After you became a doctor, she helped you deal with furious patients’ families.”

“But Maya had been in love with me all along. If you hadn’t been shameless enough to assume my confession and proposal were meant for you, Maya and I never would have missed our chance.”

“But don’t blame Maya. She’s kind. She only kept it from you because she was afraid you would fall apart.”

Every word he said felt like another ax blow to my heart.

The pain cut so deep it seemed to settle into my bones.

I laughed until tears streamed down my face, my voice thick with anger and hurt.

“If I hadn’t found out, how long were you planning to lie to me? Forever?”

Gavin frowned. His fingertip brushed away my tears as if he were coaxing an unruly child.

“You know I hate seeing you cry. According to the plan, we were supposed to tell you last year, but Maya got pregnant. We had to push it back another year and wait until the baby was born.”

I pulled away from him as if I had been burned.

As I looked at him, my disbelief shattered into heartbreak.

So that was what Gavin meant. He had been afraid I would make a scene, upset Maya, and put the baby at risk.

But he did not know that we had once had an unborn child too.

That child had been so tiny, yet died in that avalanche.

It did not matter anymore. I wiped away my tears.

The overseas medical research project had already begun. In less than two days, I would be leaving.

Gavin seemed about to say something else, but a nurse called him away.

I got out of bed and went to the next hospital room, where my mother-in-law had supposedly been paralyzed for three years.

I had meant to say goodbye to her, but before I reached the door, I heard a familiar voice.

“Mrs. Weston Sr., it must have been hard pretending to be paralyzed for three years.”

Something taut in my mind snapped.

Inside the room, my mother continued with a sigh. “You know Maya is my biological daughter. I already owed her so much. I never expected Gavin to fall for her too, so I had no choice but to keep acting along with them.”

Mrs. Weston Sr. set down the jump rope beside her.

“Evelyn is a good girl. It’s just a shame she and Gavin were never meant to be.”

My father murmured in agreement beside them.

I could no longer hear what they said after that.

It felt as if someone had planted a bomb inside my skull, and every word set off another detonation.

So all this time, while I had been exhausted by guilt and self-blame, cleaning my mother-in-law after bowel movements and changing her adult diapers every day, they had only been acting?

No wonder every time I hired a lawyer to look into the truth, my parents would call and say my mother-in-law had fallen again, burned herself again, or had another breakdown.

No wonder Maya spent every Christmas at my parents’ house, and my parents had even sold a house to buy her diamond wedding jewelry.

A massive wave of bitter irony spread through me. I could not take it anymore, so I turned and ran to the restroom.

Huge tears splattered onto the floor.

Blood had soaked through the bandage on my forehead again.

But I could not feel the pain. With trembling hands, I texted Professor Carter from the medical research team.

Me: [Professor Carter, I’m willing to live under an assumed identity for three years. Your team can help me carry out the fake-death plan now.]
