My Husband’s Gold Digger Test Cost Him His Wife and Son Chapter 06

Inside the massive warehouse, only two old standing air conditioners were pushing out weak streams of lukewarm air.

They did almost nothing.

Heat, humidity, the plastic smell of shipping bags, and the dusty scent of stacked cardboard boxes.

Ethan watched an older woman walk in, her spine bent nearly double under the weight of a package twice

her size, her face flushed red with strain, and sweat dripped from her chin onto the concrete floor as she

gritted her teeth and kept moving.

For one moment, he seemed to see what I must have looked like when I worked there.

His chest tightened.

Someone suddenly bumped his shoulder. A man with a cigarette dangling from his mouth walked over and glanced at him.

“You looking for me?”

Ethan nodded.

“I… I’m looking for my wife. Do you know where Emma went?”

Manager Hughes took a hard drag from his cigarette.

Men who spent their lives doing hard labor tended to speak plainly.

“You heartless son of a bitch. Now you come looking for her?”

“What the hell was wrong with you? You forced Emma to keep that kid in that fancy private school with tuition through the roof, and you didn’t give her a single dime,”

He lifted a hand and pointed at the woman who was still struggling with the heavy crates.

“See that? When Emma was short on money, she could do that for two nights straight.”

“Just to earn a little extra.”

“She hurt her back doing it, took a couple painkillers, and showed up the next day anyway.’

A sharp, stinging burn hit the back of Ethan’s throat. All he could do was say in a low voice, “I failed her and the child. I want to make it up to them.”

Hughes sighed.

“She quit. Said she was taking her kid and leaving. That’s all I know.”

“If you’ve got any conscience left, leave them alone.”

“They’ve suffered enough. Stop wringing more out of them.”

Hughes walked away.

Ethan had no choice but to go to the next place where I had worked retracing my painful steps.

The restaurant where I washed dishes, the food delivery station, the bar where I picked up temporary cleaning shifts.

Before, those places had been nothing more than cold lines in a file prepared by his people.

But now, as Ethan went to each one himself, he finally learned how hard those days had really been.

“Emma? She quit. But that woman was tough. Once, she sliced her finger open, wrapped it in plastic wrap, and kept washing dishes. Said her kid went to an elite private school, and the tuition and expenses were killing her. She wanted to buy him a new pair of shoes so the other kids wouldn’t look down on him.”

“Haven’t seen her in a while. She used to do delivery runs in the rain. Fell off her scooter one day. After that, she stopped coming.”

“Oh, Emma. She’s not cleaning bathrooms here anymore. Left. Drunk customers would get nasty and even throw up on her. Who could stand that? But the money was good, so she took it. She had a husband? With the way she busted her ass, I honestly thought she was a widow.”

Ethan listened to every word, and even breathing began to feel heavy.

It was not just heartache.

It felt more like a punishment arriving far too late.

Every sentence carved into his chest until his heart felt raw and bloody.

As he left the bar, the owner stopped him and handed him a toy box.

“Emma asked me to buy this off Amazon. A Lego set.”

“She said the other kids at school all had one, but Noah didn’t.”

“She cleaned bathrooms for half a month just to buy this for her son.”

“If you find her, give it to her for me. Poor woman.”

Ethan looked down at the Lego in his hands.

It was nothing special.

A three-figure price tag meant almost nothing to him.

He had bought Ryan piles of toys like this without thinking twice.

But now, holding this one box, it felt so heavy he could barely keep his grip on it.

When he returned home, the villa was empty.

Noah was gone.

So was I.

As if something had suddenly occurred to him, Ethan asked the housekeeper, “Where does Noah keep his

toys?”

The housekeeper looked confused.

“There isn’t a place, sir. The young master… doesn’t really have any toys.”

She hesitated, then lowered her voice.

“A couple days ago, Miss Vanessa gave him an old Lego set. He liked it very much. Later, I think Master Ryan

called him a little beggar because of it.”

“He cried for two days. Mrs. Whitmore was the one who finally calmed him down.”

A sharp buzzing noise roared in Ethan’s ears.

Tears fell almost instantly, one after another, landing on the cold, gleaming marble floor.

In the bedroom, my luggage had only been a small pile, even less than what I had brought when we first got

married.

Ethan could not stop himself from asking the question.

What had I taken from him?

What could Emma possibly have taken?

Three years of hardship?

A suffocating wave of regret hit him all at once.

He should never have listened to his grandfather.

Gold digger.

Tests.

What did any of it matter?

He was Ethan Whitmore. He had more money than he could ever spend.

Even if I had been a gold digger, he could still have supported me and Noah without the slightest difficulty.

But the cruelest part was that I was not.

Ethan’s vision blurred.

He looked toward the empty spot on the master bedroom wall.

That was where our ridiculous, cheap little photo had once hung..

Now there was nothing left.

At last, he understood.

I was not angry.

Noah and I had truly erased him.

The phone rang at the worst possible time.

It was Mr. Whitmore.

“Have you found her? If it comes down to it, transfer her a few tens of millions. Once Emma sees the money, she won’t stay mad at you.”

“When she comes back, I’ll personally arrange a grand wedding for you two as compensation.”

Ethan was silent for a moment.

When he spoke again, his voice was already choked.

“Grandpa, there’s no need.”

“She and Noah are gone. And they are never coming back.”
