My Childhood Friend Loves Mocking Me Chapter 03

Aunt Clara’s car had arrived. She stepped out and, with a worried look, draped a thick coat over my shoulders.

It was then that Jake rushed over breathlessly.

He took off his helmet, looking rather uneasy.

“Sorry, Chloe and the others asked me to play ball, and I totally lost track of time,” he said.

Aunt Clara raised her hand and swatted him without hesitation.

“Have you lost your mind? It’s late and windy! How could you leave Lila here all by herself?”

Jake dodged her blows while she kept scolding him nonstop.

He finally frowned in annoyance.

“Why is it my fault? She’s a big girl. Doesn’t she have hands? Can’t she call a cab or her own phone?”

“I have my own things to do too. Why do I have to stick around her all the time?”

With that, he grabbed his helmet and stormed off. The loud roar of his motorcycle echoed sharply through the quiet night.

On the ride home, Aunt Clara held my hand, her eyes filled with sympathy.

“That boy’s just spoiled rotten and going through his rebellious phase. Don’t take his words to heart, Lila.”

I forced a faint smile and shook my head.

She smoothed my hair softly.

“I still remember how tiny you were when you first came here. Seeing how well you’ve grown up, your mother would surely be proud of you.”

I squeezed her hand back sincerely.

“Thank you so much, Aunt Clara.”

My parents were professional geologists. Eight years ago, they had to leave for a long-term field expedition.

There was no one left to take care of me at home, and I was too young to travel along with them.

That’s when my mom’s best friend, Aunt Clara, stepped in. “Let Lila stay with us,” she’d said warmly. “Jake and I will take good care of her.”

Eight years had passed, and they had accompanied me through every part of my youth.

Deep down, I truly did not want to part ways with Jake.

Jake started giving me the silent treatment out of nowhere, even refusing to wait for me on the way to school.

Once we reached campus, Chloe walked past me on purpose.

“I’m so sorry, Lila. I was the one who asked Jake to play ball on Sunday. I heard you were left waiting in the cold.”

Before I could reply, Jake stepped coldly in front of me.

“There’s no need for you to apologize to her. She’s the one being silly, she has no right to blame others.”

The two of them left while laughing cheerfully. Mia rolled her eyes beside me.

“I can’t stand this kind of fake kindness at all.”

She handed me a piece of chocolate.

“Just ignore them, they’re being ridiculous. By the way, have you found a date for the end-of-month Senior Prom?”

I froze in surprise, and Mia slapped her forehead.

“Never mind, you’re definitely going with Jake. He may have a sharp tongue, but he’s easy on the eyes after all.”

She lay her head on the desk and sighed deeply.

“I’m stuck though. None of the boys in our class are decent. I wish I could dance the male part instead, it’s so frustrating.”

I lowered my head toward my textbooks, yet I could not focus on a single word.

Only over a month remained until the college entrance exams,

and the most anticipated school event, the Senior Prom, was drawing near at the end of the month.

That night was known as the last grand celebration for senior students,

and also marked our official step into adulthood.

On the way home that evening, Jake stared down at his phone casually as he spoke.

“You’d better practice your dance steps these days. Don’t keep stepping on my feet at the prom, got it?”

I gazed at the sunset outside the car window and smiled softly.

“Alright.”
