Examining the Dead Got Me Branded a Cheater Chapter 10

Examining the Dead Got Me Branded a Cheater Chapter 10

Tyler reported to HQ that Harry had been covering for Julian at the department and allowing him to meddle in the investigation. They brought Harry in for questioning.

In the serial murder case, Claire’s repeated defense of Julian delayed the investigation, leading to three additional victims. This was a serious failure on her part.

She was stripped of her captain’s rank and suspended, and the decision was announced publicly. As for when she might return to the department, the higher-ups hadn’t given a definitive answer.

As for Julian, once he was no longer under the department’s protection, the victims’ families, who had been waiting for him, hired a group of men dressed in black to take out their anger on him.

Not long after, he showed up at the station in a manic state to file a report. Before anything was even filed, he took his own life.

As for the rumors about me back then, they disappeared without a trace once we caught the serial

killer.

Meanwhile, the newly appointed police chief asked me to come by the station to discuss returning as a medical examiner.

I ran into Claire, who was there to finalize her resignation paperwork. She looked utterly dejected and downcast.

I pretended not to know her. But she stopped me, forced a smile, and said, “Evan, I really regret it. I thought Julian was the right person for me. Now I realize the right person was by my side all along.

“I never meant to hurt you. I only went along with his lie because I was afraid he might hurt you again. Is it too late for me to say this?”

She gave a bitter smile, with this wrong kind of hope in her eyes.

I fixed her with a cold stare. “You consider covering for him to be helping me? Quit bending the truth, Claire Sutton. You never chose me over Julian. What makes you think we still have a chance together?”

I started to walk away, but she grabbed my wrist.

When she realized how much I was pulling away, she let go right away and whispered, “What if I say we still have a chance? When you asked for the divorce, I only said those lies to keep you from going through with it.

“You’re not the only one who cared about our marriage. I did, too. It’s a shame. I don’t think I can ever have that version of you again.”

I didn’t go back and forth with Claire. I set a wide distance between us, the way our lives looked now. We might still see each other, but our paths would never cross again.

I passed on the new chief’s offer. I told him I could pitch in if they needed me, but I wasn’t sticking

around. The task force was already waiting for me at the airport.

When I finally showed up, Tyler said, “You brat, you made us wait forever. We should knock back a few when we hit Norvela City.”

One of the guys slung an arm over me, joking, “Alright, it’s settled. You’re one of us now. No bailing when it counts.”

Smiling, I followed the boarding call to the gate. “I’m not bailing.”

The plane took off, and I didn’t look back. I was off to bigger and better things.
