He Crushed My Hearing Aid to Keep Me, Not Knowing I Just Heard His Confession Chapter 08

Sleep wouldn’t come.

I was just starting to drift off late into the night when light poured under my bedroom door.

I threw open the door. The living room was a wall of flame – smoke punched into my lungs and the heat slammed into me like a solid thing.

I stumbled back, choking, scanning for a way out. Whoever did this hadn’t left me a way out. Every

exit was swallowed.

The front door exploded inward.

Silas – soaked through, a wet blanket thrown over his shoulders – charged through the smoke.

He grabbed my hand and hauled me out of the building.

Outside, I looked up. Flames spilled from the windows of my apartment — the only home I’d ever

known. I didn’t know what I was feeling. Everything and nothing at the same time.

But I knew one thing: I was done compromising.

A face in the crowd caught my eye. I shoved through and grabbed her wrist. Blair.

She yanked free, her lip curling, and turned to walk away. Silas caught her arm before she took two steps. His expression hardened, his lips moving in a flat, tight line!

“Did you start that fire?”

Blair’s eyes went wide – all rehearsed shock. “I was just walking by. Why would I – God, Silas, is that seriously what you think of me?”

Blair leaned in testing him, playing at intimacy. Silas shifted back, almost imperceptibly, and

watched her like he was studying the fine print.

But without proof, there was nothing Silas could do. He looked at me. I caught the way his jaw clenched – the way his eyes stayed on my face a beat too long, like something inside him was

tearing.

The next morning, the principal’s people were already everywhere – handpicked board members, friendly cameras, a stage curated down to the last detail.

They put me at the podium. The vice principal cornered me right before I went up.

“We don’t need to tell you what to say up there, do we? Stick to the script. Do that, and we’ll take care of you.”

I nodded. Then, past the lights, I found Silas standing in the crowd.

The cameras locked on.

It was the second time I’d stood under lights like these. This time, I wasn’t afraid.

“I’m here to tell you the truth. Not the version the school signed off on. The real one.”

“Blair, a student at Crestview High, cheated on her entrance exam – and killed my parents in a hit-and-run.”

“Silas, her classmate, helped plan the hit-and-run. He also destroyed my hearing aids before the exam to make sure I couldn’t take it.”

“And the administration at Crestview covered all of it up. They buried the evidence, silenced the victim, and tried to buy me off.”

The room erupted.

The principal lunged for the cameras. “Cut the feed! Turn those off – turn them OFF! She’s lying- none of this is true!”

He lunged for the podium, his face red with panic, scrambling to cut my mic. “Get her off the stage!

Now!”

He frantically signaled the school security guards. They rushed the stage to pull me away.

Silas stepped between us. He didn’t say a word – just nodded toward the back of the room.

The district officials were already on their feet. Every one of them was staring straight at the

principal.

Everything after that blurred together. People everywhere officials, officers, voices overlapping.

Squad cars lined the street. Blair was put into the back of one.

Silas grabbed my wrist and pulled me into a side alley before anyone could notice.

His thoughts had gone quiet. They’d been quiet for a while now – like something in him had gone

still.

In the narrow darkness of the alley, he turned to face me.

“Is this what you wanted, Clara? Are you happy now?”

“We had a plan – same school, same classes, together every day. You promised me that. You promised we’d never be apart.”

He seized my hand. His face crumpled, his lips trembling with desperate hope.

I pulled free. When I spoke, there was nothing in my voice – no warmth, no anger, nothing at all.

“You want me to build a life with the person who planned my parents’ murder? Is that the fairy tale you’ve been selling yourself?”

“There’s nowhere left to hide, Silas.”

The color left his face. He stared at me like I’d become someone he didn’t recognize.

I could almost see it happen – the panic spidering through him like a crack in glass, widening with every heartbeat.

His face twisted. I stepped back.

Blue uniforms flooded into the alley behind me. I’d shared my location the second he pulled me in

here.

Some people don’t get forgiveness. He was one of them.

“We’re done.” The officers pushed past me, grabbing his arms.

His thoughts screamed through me one last time. For the first time, I felt nothing.

I turned around and walked into the light.

The world was quiet. For once, I didn’t need anything more.
