The Wedding Is Off, and So Am I Chapter 01

The Wedding Is Off, and So Am I Chapter 01

The day before the wedding, my fiancé didn’t bother to show up for the rehearsal.

That night, I received a text from him:

Lucas Sterling: [Celeste is pregnant, the baby isn’t mine.]

Lucas Sterling: [But I have to get a marriage certificate with her first, so the child can have legal ID.]

Lucas Sterling: [Let’s postpone our wedding for three years. Don’t contact me during this time.]

Lucas Sterling: [You figure out how to explain it to both families. Whatever you do, don’t affect Celeste’s reputation.

Just say you’re the one who doesn’t want to get married.]

I replied with just one word:

Vera Vance: [Okay.]

I really didn’t want to get married anymore.

Almost at the same time, his childhood friend posted on social media.

The photo showed two hands wearing couple rings, forming a heart shape.

Inside the heart was an ultrasound image showing an embryo at seven weeks.

The caption read: “He said he wants to give us a home.”

In the comments, Lucas’s friends all liked it and congratulated them on finally making it official, saying they’d definitely give them a generous cash gift tomorrow.

No one mentioned me.

It was as if tomorrow’s wedding had always been meant for the two of them, and I had nothing to do with it.

I smiled bitterly and liked the post.

I commented: “Wishing you a lifetime of happiness!”

My comment was sandwiched between a bunch of well-wishes and didn’t stand out.

But the next second, the comment was deleted.

Then Lucas called, his tone full of impatience. “Vera, what do you mean by that? You left that comment on purpose to cause trouble, didn’t you?”

I was speechless.

“I’m not causing trouble. I genuinely wish you both a lifetime of happiness.”

But Lucas couldn’t hear my sincerity at all. He was convinced I was trying to stir things up.

“Come on, I know whether you’re being sincere or not.”

“Everyone knows tomorrow’s wedding was supposed to be ours. You suddenly pop up with that sarcastic comment just to make Celeste look bad, don’t you?”

“Apologize to Celeste! She’s been crying nonstop because of your comment.”

On the other end of the line, a woman’s sobbing voice came through: “Lucas, forget it! It’s my fault for asking you to help. I’ll just schedule a surgery and get rid of the baby! So what if I can never be a mother again? It’s better than being called a homewrecker!”

Lucas immediately softened his voice, soothing Celeste Montgomery like she was a child: “Celeste, you’re not a homewrecker! Once we get the marriage certificate tomorrow, we’ll be legally married. The law will recognize it.”

“Don’t listen to that thoughtless nonsense from some people. If anyone dares to laugh at you, I’ll rip their mouth apart.”

But Celeste only cried louder: “What about Vera? Won’t she feel terrible? I should just get an abortion, and you two can have your wedding tomorrow as planned.”

Lucas’s voice grew even softer, tinged with anxiety: “Celeste, I’ve already talked to her. She just has to wait three more years, and then she’ll get what she wants. It’s not like I’m going to run away.”

“Stop crying, or your stomach will start hurting again.”

“And if your eyes get all swollen, how can you be a beautiful bride tomorrow?”

Celeste laughed through her tears.

Lucas sighed with relief, then spoke to me in a much milder tone: “Vera, you’re not saying anything. Hurry up and apologize to Celeste.”

I clenched my fists, regretting why I’d been so careless as to like and comment.

But I wasn’t wrong. Why should I apologize?

“Lucas, what if I say no?”

He froze for a moment, then raised his voice impatience, “Vera, if you keep this up, you’re just making yourself look bad.

Celeste is pregnant, her emotions are already fragile, and you’re deliberately making her cry. That’s so immature.”

“If you won’t apologize, then make up for it with your actions. You need to explain to our friends and family that you’re the one who doesn’t want to get married.”
