The Donna’s Lethal Goodbye Chapter 05

The Donna’s Lethal Goodbye Chapter 05

“Move! Get the hell out of my way!”

Cassius slammed his palm against the steering wheel’s horn. Navigating through the dense traffic, he glared dead ahead, his eyes bloodshot.

Just a minute ago, he had seen Evelyn.

She was sitting in that car, watching him kiss Selena’s belly. Her gaze had been deadly calm-as if she were looking at a complete

stranger, or a cold corpse.

Up ahead, a heavy truck suddenly swerved into his lane. Cassius jerked the steering wheel hard.

The chassis swayed violently, missing the guardrail by inches. By the time he stabilized the car and looked up, the curve ahead was

entirely empty.

‘I must have seen it wrong, Cassius convinced himself. Evelyn should be back at the estate right now. Those hollow, emotionless eyes could not possibly belong to his wife.

*Cassius!”

Selena ran over from the photoshoot set, panting. Her face was twisted with grievance and irritation. “The photographer hasn’t even finished, and you’re just going to leave me here?”

“Gang emergency. Call a cab yourself.” His voice was dangerously hoarse, carrying an undeniable, chilling authority.

He sped all the way back to the Moretti estate.

Roughly shoving the front doors open, Cassius strode into the main hall, radiating an icy hostility.

“Evelyn!”

His voice echoed through the cavernous hall. No response.

He practically sprinted up to the second floor and slammed the master bedroom door open. The room was immaculately, horrifyingly

neat.

He stormed into the walk-in closet, and his heart plummeted.

Several of Evelyn’s go-to coats were missing. The black duffel bag she used for her personal essentials was gone, too.

“Don…” the butler stammered, trembling in the doorway.

Cassius crossed the room in two strides, grabbing the butler by the collar and hoisting him half off the floor. “Where is Evelyn?”

“The Donna… she drove off,” the butler choked out, cold sweat pouring down his face. “She carried a bag down herself. She didn’t want a driver, and she didn’t say where she was going.”

Cassius threw him aside. He yanked out his phone and speed-dialed her number.

“The number you have dialed is powered off…”

The cold, mechanical female voice grated against his nerves like a jagged saw.

Married for five years. Evelyn never ignored his calls.

Panic-a raw, entirely unfamiliar terror-instantly seized the mafia godfather’s chest.

“Cass… what’s wrong?”

Selena’s tentative voice came from the top of the stairs. She had rushed back to the estate, masking her face with carefully rehearsed concern. ‘I heard Evelyn isn’t home?”

Cassius brushed right past her without sparing her a single glance. “Can’t find Evelyn. Get out of my way.”

Watching his taillights tear through the night once again, Selena covered her mouth, unable to stop the corners of her lips from curling

upward.

She knew her text messages and the video had done their job.

Never come back. It’s better if you die out there, leaving not a single trace behind, Selena cursed viciously.

“Check the ports! Lock down all private yachts and freighters!”

‘Pull up all the surveillance footage! Train stations, airports-do not let a single exit route slip through the cracks!”

Cassius sat in the back of the car, barking orders into his phone. He had already yanked his tie loose, popping the top two buttons of his shirt. He looked like an enraged, caged beast.

Five hours went by. Zero credit card activity. Zero departure records.

Suddenly, a memory flashed through Cassius’s mind: Selena coming downstairs in his dress shirt a few days ago. Evelyn had been sitting right there, perfectly calm, without so much as a ripple of emotion.

Did she figure something out? Did she overhear something?

No. Impossible. She had been so composed-she even offered to go to the hospital with him. If she knew the truth, she would have thrown her hot coffee right in his face. She couldn’t possibly know.

The car radio suddenly buzzed with static.

“Don… we found the Donna’s phone. As for her car, it was abandoned in a surveillance blind spot on the outskirts of town.”

The bloodshot vessels in Cassius’s eyes looked ready to burst.

His brain went into overdrive. His first thought wasn’t betrayal, but bone-chilling fear.

“Someone took her, Cassius ground out through clenched teeth. ‘Lock down every highway out of the city. Get that phone repaired. Now!

Back at the estate, Cassius stared intensely at the shattered phone brought to his desk.

The screen flickered a few times before half of it weakly lit up.

There were no ransom demands from kidnappers. No SOS messages.

Right at the top were messages from Selena:

[Did you see that, Evelyn? We’re the real family here. As for you, you’re just an outsider taking up space.]

[If you know what’s good for you, pack your things and get lost. Don’t bother us anymore!]

And at the very bottom of the screen was the final message Evelyn had replied with:

[I wish you both happiness.]
