During the flight, Ethan sat between Sophie and me.

The person chattering away to Ethan was no longer me. It was Sophie.

I stayed quiet and chatted with AI Guy on and off.

Lila: [Will you really show up?]

AI Guy: [As long as you want me to, I will.]

My heart gave a sudden little jump, and my face began to heat.

Ethan’s voice came from beside me.

“Why is your face so red?”

“Don’t tell me you have a fever again. What a hassle.”

As he spoke, he began rummaging through his bag for something.

But very quickly, he realized he hadn’t brought his own luggage when he left.

That included all the medicine he usually carried for me.

“Don’t bother looking. I don’t have a fever.”

“And from now on, you don’t need to carry those things for me either.”

Ethan seemed about to say something, but Sophie soon drew his attention away.

A drink had spilled on her.

I watched as Ethan patiently dabbed the spilled drink from her legs with napkins, without a single complaint the entire time.

Okay, I shipped them.

But for some reason, Sophie suddenly called out to me.

“Lila, this must be how Ethan used to take care of you, right?”

“I feel kind of bad being such a third wheel between you two.”

I had no idea why Sophie always had this incredible ability to make the atmosphere painfully awkward.

I smiled without answering, then got up to go to the restroom.

Just then, the plane suddenly hit turbulence. I lost my balance, and my body tipped straight backward.

A buzzing filled my ears.

Just when I thought I was about to hit the floor, a pair of strong hands caught me steadily.

In that flash of a moment, I remembered what AI Guy had said.

[I’ll be right here. I won’t hide, I won’t run, and I won’t disappear.]

[I’ll catch you, steady and sure.]

But when I turned my head, the first thing I saw was the bald head of a man around fifty.

“Careful, kiddo.”

I scrambled upright.

“Thank you. Thank you so much, sir.”

The next second, someone grabbed my wrist.

It was Ethan.

In the corner of the cabin, Ethan looked displeased.

“Lila, you’re not a child anymore.”

“Are you seriously still using tricks like this to get attention?”

I was already drowning in embarrassment from what had just happened. Hearing Ethan scold me only made me feel even more miserable.

“Ethan, what are you talking about?”

He ignored the fact that I had almost fallen.

“What I’m saying is, can you stop acting so desperate? Would it kill you not to depend on me?”

Ethan looked completely serious.

If he could say something that cruel, then he really didn’t care about me at all anymore.

I sniffed.

In a muffled voice, I said, “Got it.”

Then I turned and walked into the restroom without looking back.

I shut myself inside and sat there quietly for ten minutes.

I finally figured it out.

I was done liking Ethan.
