She Woke Up After Eight Years To Find Her Husband Had A New Wife Chapter 05

Lucian nodded stiffly, his gaze never once daring to land on me.

Vanessa studied me with suspicion, her voice laced with barely concealed wariness.

“I thought you said you were just a fan of Lucian. So why exactly were you calling him your husband?”

Before I could speak, Lucian cut in. There was a plea in his eyes that only I could get it.

“Her mind is still a bit foggy. Long-term freezing can affect memory. I mentioned this in my earlier papers.”

Mr. Carter nodded in sudden realization.

“Right, right. I have seen that in the reports too.”

“Quite a few patients mistake doctors for their family after waking up.”

Vanessa’s expression softened slightly, but the scrutiny in her eyes remained.

Lucian drew a slow breath, steadying himself.

“Vanessa, could you keep Mr. Carter company for a bit?”

“I need to speak with her alone and check her condition. It’s important for the follow-up research.”

With that, he strode over, grabbed my wrist, and pulled me toward the study.

From behind us, Vanessa’s voice rang out, “Lucian, be gentle. She just woke up. Don’t hurt her.”

He didn’t respond. The study door slammed shut with a loud bang.

He finally let go of my wrist and turned to me.

After eight years, he looked more mature than I remembered.

Fine lines had formed at the corners of his eyes, and strands of gray had appeared at his temples.

“Isolde.” He called my name, his voice trembling.

I leaned against the door and simply looked at him, waiting for an explanation.

But he just stood there, unable to say a single word for a long time.

My voice broke as I spoke. “Lucian, I waited eight years.”

“And I came back to find you married to someone else, letting my son call another woman his mother?”

He suddenly lifted his head. “Isolde, let me explain—”

I cut him off. “Fine. Explain. I’m listening.”

And yet, he fell silent again.

The light of the setting sun landed perfectly on the wedding photo of him and Vanessa.

In the picture, they smiled sweetly, and the sight stabbed at my eyes.

Lucian finally spoke with difficulty. “Vanessa only appeared after you were frozen.”

I sneered. “And?”

“You held me in your arms and swore you’d wait for me.”

“You said you’d be there when I woke up.”

“Less than three months later, you were marrying someone else.”

He suddenly grew agitated. “You don’t understand!”

“After you were frozen, I had to take care of the child on my own while continuing my research. I was drowning!”

“Vanessa—she stepped in. Took care of everything.”

“The house, the baby. She made it possible for me to work.”

Each word struck me like a blow, hitting the wound in my heart.

“So what am I supposed to do—thank her?”

“Thank her for sleeping with my husband? For taking my place as my son’s mother?”

Lucian’s face turned pale and tense. “Isolde, don’t say it like that.”

I stared at him, my voice steady and cold.

“Lucian, I’m saying this calmly. I’m going to tell everyone your wife is still alive. That makes your current marriage illegal.”

His eyes widened for a moment, then he suddenly laughed.

“You think anyone will believe you?” His voice turned eerily calm.

“You have been frozen for eight years. Do you even have an ID now? Who can prove who you are?”

My stomach dropped.

He continued, “Our marriage was never made public.”

“No wedding. No announcements. No photos in the paper.”

“And that marriage certificate? The one we filed in some small town where the records were barely kept? Good luck finding it now.”

“So tell me, Isolde.”

“What proof do you have—that you were ever my wife at all?”
