Caleb came back after changing his clothes and ran to Vanessa, clinging to her.

She smiled. “Caleb, sweetie, don’t be so clingy. Go play for a little bit, okay? Mommy’s talking.”

Caleb leaned in and kissed her cheek. “Mommy is the best!”

Her eyes curved into a bright smile.

I looked away. My eyes were burning, but I didn’t dare let a single tear fall.

Eight years. I had missed his first time rolling over, his first steps, and the first time he called out “Mom.”

The kisses and affection he gave Vanessa were meant to be mine.

And yet I could only sit here like a stranger.

Caleb caught me staring. His little face suddenly hardened with suspicion.

“Are you another one of bitches who tries to steal my daddy?”

I froze, unable to believe what I had just heard.

“I heard Mommy talking to Mrs. Patterson next door.”

“She said there’s always bitches trying to get my daddy’s attention.”

Caleb spoke with absolute certainty. “Hey, listen, no way! My daddy only loves my mommy!”

“Even his first wife knew to hurry up and die so my mommy could have her spot.”

Vanessa gave him a gentle swat. “Caleb! Where did you learn to talk like that?”

But there was no real discipline in it.

She just smiled and nudged him toward the hallway. “Go on, do your homework.”

The boy made a face at me and ran off.

I watched him go, something raw and tangled twisting in my chest.

Vanessa smiled. “Kids. No filter, right? Don’t take it personally.”

I shook my head, but it felt like something inside me had broken open, leaving me cold and hollow.

Just then, the front door opened.

Lucian’s voice came in, warm with a smile. “Vanessa, I’m back.”

“Mr. Carter heard that a patient came to thank me, so he insisted on coming along.”

“He wants to promote this properly and help me secure the position of associate director.”

His voice cut off abruptly.

I slowly stood up and turned around.

The moment our eyes met, all the color drained from Lucian’s face.

Something wild and terrified flickered in his eyes. But no words came.

Behind him, Mr. Carter’s voice rang out.

“Lucian! So this is the patient? I’ll have PR all over this first thing tomorrow!”

Vanessa stepped forward to greet him. “Mr. Carter! So glad you could make it. Please, come in.”

“Lucian, why are you just standing there? Say something.”

I looked at Lucian and let out a faint, bitter smile.

“Surprised, huh?”

“Your dead wife came back. Just to see how well you’ve been living.”

The blood drained completely from his face.

He froze in place. His lips parted a few times, but no words came out.

Those eyes that once spoke so confidently in lecture halls were now filled only with panic and fear.

The smile on Vanessa’s face stiffened instantly. She sensed something was wrong.

“Do you two know each other?”

“No.” Lucian answered almost too quickly.

“She’s a patient. From the cryo program. A volunteer. I’ve only ever seen her file.”

As he spoke, he took half a step back.

The man I had once loved with all my heart now didn’t even dare to admit that he knew me.

Mr. Carter breezed right past the tension, clapping Lucian on the shoulder with a booming laugh.

“Lucian! So this is the patient you brought back?”

“Look at her—she looks fantastic! To come out of eight years of cryo looking like this?”

“It’s a miracle. Medical history, right here!”
