She Woke Up After Eight Years To Find Her Husband Had A New Wife Chapter 02

Then came the year I got pregnant. That’s when they found the cancer.

Back then, there was no cure. Not for what I had.

His eyes were red as he held me.

“I can’t have children. If you’re pregnant, it’s incredibly rare.”

“Please don’t end the pregnancy. We can put the treatment on hold.”

“I’ve been researching cryonics for five years.”

“The second there’s a way to cure you, I’ll bring you back. I swear it.”

I endured the pain of my illness and gave birth to our child.

I got one look at him. Just one. Then they wheeled me into the cryo chamber.

But now, Lucian had a new wife and a new family. Everything I had sacrificed felt like a cruel joke.

And finally, the tears came. I let them fall, silent and hot, soaking into the cold hospital sheets.

Vanessa let out a soft sigh and handed me a tissue.

“There were three of you in that cryo cohort. The other two had family here the second they got the call.”

“Don’t let it get to you. Just focus on getting your strength back. I’m sure your family will be here before you know it.”

A sharp pain twisted through my chest.

I shook my head. “I don’t think I have a family anymore.”

Vanessa paused, then placed a business card beside me with a hint of sympathy.

“That’s… that’s really unfortunate. Look, if you need anything at all, you can reach out.”

She packed up her things and was about to leave.

I looked at her back and suddenly spoke. “Can I visit your home?”

She turned around, her face full of surprise.

I clenched my fists, my nails digging into my palm.

“I’d like to thank Mr. Blake in person. He saved my life, after all.”

She thought for a moment, then nodded with a smile.

“Sure, why not? He should be getting off soon. Come on.”

The car pulled up in front of a two-story house.

I followed her inside, and the sight before me rooted me to the spot.

Right there in the entryway hung a family portrait. The three of them.

By the floor-to-ceiling window, an orange tabby cat lounged lazily in the sunlight.

“Make yourself at home.”

Vanessa set down her bag and walked over to pet the cat.

“Pumpkin, sweetie, we’ve got company.”

I stared at the cat, my blood ran cold.

Our first year of marriage, I told him I wanted to get a cat.

Lucian had frowned and said he was allergic to cat fur. He would sneeze and his eyes would water.

So I let it go.

That was when I realized he could have kept his promises. He just didn’t want to bother, at least not for me.

Vanessa grabbed some cat food and went to feed it.

That’s when my eyes landed on the photo album sitting on the table. My hands were trembling as I reached for it.

Inside were all photos of their life together.

Lucian and Vanessa at the beach. Him, taking her on a carousel ride. Her birthday—he’d cooked an entire feast for her.

Every single shot. That same smile. Gentle. Adoring.

When I had been with him, he was always busy.

Too busy to eat with me. He forgot our wedding anniversary. I even had to go to my prenatal checkups alone.

I used to tell myself that’s just who he was.

A workaholic. Not the romantic type. Not good at expressing himself.

Turns out, he was more than capable. Of being thoughtful. Of showing up.

I just wasn’t the one he wanted to do any of it for.

Vanessa dialed a number, a sweet smile appearing on her face.

“Lucian, that patient you saved has come to thank you. Come home early.”

His voice came through the speaker—Lucian’s voice.

Even muffled, I could hear it. The warmth. The ease.

“Sure thing, babe. Be home soon.”

“I’ll grab you some of those maple pecan scones you love.”

Vanessa hung up and smiled at me. “Lucian can be so clingy, even in his thirties.”

“The institute wanted to send him out to Port Hamilton City for a few months once.”

“He turned it down flat. Said he couldn’t stand the thought of being away from me and the baby.”

“He told them no job was worth missing dinner with his family.”

A dull ache settled in my chest, and a bitter taste rose in my mouth.

But for me? His business trips were just part of life.

He’d disappear for weeks at a time. Barely a phone call.
