She Woke Up After Eight Years To Find Her Husband Had A New Wife Chapter 01

I was dying of cancer. As my time ran out, my husband, a gifted researcher, worked nonstop on human cryonics.

Before freezing me, he held our son, the child I had nearly died bringing into the world, and spoke through tears.

“Isolde, Caleb and I will wait for the day you wake up.”

Eight years later, a breakthrough drug for my illness finally entered clinical use. The hospital revived me.

When the doctor asked me to settle the medical bill, I stared at him in confusion and told them to contact my husband.

“Please reach out to Professor Lucian Blake at the Atherton Institute for Advanced Study. Tell him his wife has woken up.”

The nurse let out a soft laugh. “Mr. Blake and Miss Merrick have an eight year old child. They are a well known loving couple.”

“Maybe we should have the doctor check your brain later.”

I figured she was joking and brushed it off.

Until Vanessa Merrick showed up as a photographer to document me, a successful cryonics subject.

At that moment, the TV happened to be playing an interview with Lucian. My face lit up with pride.

“My husband Lucian’s the best researcher there is.”

She shot me a surprised look, her pretty face darkening.

“Lucian only has one legal wife—and that’s me.”

Vanessa lowered her camera. The smile on her face faded a little. “Who were you calling your husband just now?”

There was scrutiny in her eyes, and a trace of hostility that was hard to miss.

I froze, at a loss for words.

She let out a soft, mocking laugh. “I have seen patients like you before.”

“You leave your contact info before the procedure, then cling to Lucian afterward with that whole ‘thanking him for saving your life’ routine.”

“You really think I don’t see what you’re after?”

Her gaze swept over me. “But do yourself a favor—take a look in the mirror.”

“You’ve been out for eight years. Your muscles are gone, you’re pale as a ghost.”

“Looking like that, who exactly are you hoping to seduce?”

I opened my mouth, but my throat seized up. Nothing came out.

Just then, the nurse pushed the door open. Seeing the tension, she hurried to smooth things over.

“Ms. Merrick, please don’t mind her. She just woke up—her head’s still a little foggy. Sometimes she talks nonsense.”

Vanessa glanced at the nurse, her tone easing a little. “Fine. I won’t waste my breath.”

I lowered my head, hiding the tears welling up. My voice came out in a rasp.

“I’m sorry. My head hurts. I was talking nonsense just now.”

“I was a fan of Mr. Blake even before I signed up for the cryo program. Always admired him.”

“Guess I got a little carried away when I saw him on TV.”

Her expression finally softened. She picked up her camera and went back to taking pictures.

“You look like you are in decent condition. The records say you were frozen for eight years. Have you contacted your family?”

The moment she said that, all the strength drained from my body. I slumped against the headboard.

Eight years had passed. My body hadn’t changed. My skin still looked like it belonged to a woman in her twenties.

But in that instant, my heart had aged more than a decade.

Everyone else had moved on. I was the only one left behind—a ghost forgotten by time.

When we first got married, Lucian was the youngest researcher at the Atherton Institute. His whole future stretched out in front of him, bright and limitless.

I was a somewhat well known female racer in the circuit, bold and untamed.

The first time we met, his car had broken down halfway, and he was in a rush to attend a symposium.

I rode my motorcycle and took him there. Watching him speak confidently on stage, I fell for him.

When I went after him, everyone said we were a terrible match.

But Lucian held me and swore, “Isolde, I will never let you down. Not in this life.”

After the wedding, he told me he needed to stay focused on his work.

He said it would be better to keep our marriage private for a while.

So we kept our marriage a secret for three years.

I thought it was romantic. Stupid, I know. I actually believed we were protecting each other.
